The symbols in this play are too numerous to count, but many of them hinge on the idea of the changing social order or the specific circumstance of a given character. Firs himself is a figure of time Anya is a figure of hope. The cherry orchard symbolizes the old social order, the aristocratic home, and its destruction symbolizes change. Gay's imaginary billiards game symbolizes his desire to escape. The keys at Barbara's waist symbolize her practicality and her power. Works such as The Cherry Orchard, which cannot be subjected to the traditional standards of classification, have helped build new modern literary traditions through their innovation in genre. Although Chekhov is certainly not the first playwright to mix comic and tragic elements onstage, he develops this tendency by creating a play that defies classification as either one of these two dramatic genres. Traditionally, humor and tragedy have been kept separate in dramatic works. Lopakhin's speech at the end of Act III, recounting the sale of the cherry orchard, is the most important example of indirect action in the play: although the audience does not see the sale, the entire play revolves around this unseen action. Instead of seeing such action happen, the audience learns about it by watching characters react to it onstage. It involves action important to the play's plot occurring off-stage, not on. Indirect Action is a technique Chekhov was most famous for.

People continued to filter in for another thirty minutes. It was a half size too small, but she had on her black velvet suit jacket, so it looked fine. It was a distressed blue T-shirt with a vintage-looking Wonder Woman logo emblazoned over her breasts. Trish had planned everything down to her shirt-a great find at Goodwill. Timing an ambush of one of the wealthiest men on the planet required precision. She was as ready as she was ever going to be. She wished she could afford a cell phone-then she could at least play with that until the talk started instead of being the only person in the room who wasn't connected. She'd gotten here early enough that no one had seen her smuggle in the check. Trish had been sitting in her spot-end of the third row, to the left of the podium on the stage-for over an hour. No billionaire would risk looking heartless by saying no to a charity in front of a big crowd. A good crowd would leverage some social pressure on her target. The auditorium was filling up, which was exactly what Trish wanted. Although we are undoubtedly too wise and/or jaded now to believe in the kinds of women-led utopias depicted in such feminist classics as Charlotte Perkins Gilman’s Herland or Marge Piercy’s Woman on the Edge of Time, The Power felt as though it skipped too quickly over the possibilities for difference, let alone betterment, and slid straight into a repeat of all the problems we have now, just sex-swapped. If there was a flaw in the book it was that – to use a literary term – things went to shit too quickly. It doesn’t work quite so well on screen, where it feels like we are hopping endlessly about but, given that we don’t get to grips with what is going on until the third episode, moving ponderously slowly towards each revelation at the same time. There is time and detail enough to let the reader invest in each one. The Power envisions a world in which all women worldwide are suddenly capable of wielding incredible Power at their fingertips. ‘I should have called,’ says Margot, ‘as soon as it started.
